As Bee Countians speed off to view the inaugural Texas Mile event hosted at Chase Field, or onto the highways to enjoy the long Memorial Day weekend, let us first take a moment to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice for our American liberties.

For those who are in town this holiday weekend, don’t forget the Memorial Day ceremony scheduled for 10 a.m. Monday at the newly restored Veterans Monument at Veterans Memorial Park.

We salute our local veterans Bobby Clark, Armando Musquez, Rosendo Garcia, Joe Richard Rodriguez, Wally Saldaña, Joe Henry Lopez and all others (including the city crews) involved in this project that is near and dear to their hearts.

Also, we share their appreciation for Kay and Associates and Sikorsky Aerospace Maintenance, the companies that repair and rebuild Black Hawk helicopters at the Chase Field Industrial and Airport Complex.

Although new to the community, these firms have already proven to be good neighbors as well as vital assets, employing about 200 people there and with plans to hire an additional 100 or more workers in high-paying positions when the warehouse is added to provide more work space at the former naval base.

Now the veterans are thanking them for spending a considerable amount of money to give the Veterans Monument area at the 200-acre park on the city’s west side a badly needed face-lift.

They encourage everyone to come to the memorial service Monday morning to see what has been done at the site and to honor those who have died defending the nation.

It would seem that’s the least we could do to show them our respect.
