The Statue of Liberty arrived in New York Harbor on June 19, 1885, as a gift of friendship from the people of France to the people of the United States. Sculptor Frederic-Auguste Bartholdi's Liberty Enlightening the World measures 151 feet high and has come to symbolize freedom and democracy nationwide.

The Library of Congress presents "America's Library" as a public service as part of its mission to provide as much access to its collections as possible. The Web site contains many documents, prints, photographs, maps, recordings and other materials from the past. Some of these materials reflect viewpoints or information that may seem insensitive today. Their content is not meant to offend; it does, however reflect history.
