Lagarto–Sept. 21 - After a long and dry summer, the ladies of the Lagarto Community Club met this month with their usual “bring-a-dish” luncheon. The Board of Directors played hostesses and set the theme as “Oldies But Goodies,” each wearing a straw hat. Dessert was provided by one of the husbands, Frank Avila, who had the ice cream and makings for our own soda bar. Always in the mood to sing a few tunes, Lee Smith led our little group in a sing-a-long with songs like “Baby Face” – “Shine on Harvest Moon” – “You Are My Sunshine” – “Bicycle Built for Two.” Fun…fun…fun. And, who won the door prize of a vase with a potted ivy? Frank Avila, of course!

Always getting ready for the annual craft bazaar which is held on the second Saturday of November, we now have our raffle tickets for sale. Top prize has once again been donated by Elizabeth and Robert Ellis. It will be a fire pit which any of us can use on the patio this winter. Second prize will be the quilt that had Chole Trevino and Diana Vasquez working so diligently to get ready for this bazaar – and, it is beautiful. The third drawing will be a wooden rocker donated by Beverly Strong and the fourth drawing will be for some very pretty costume jewelry donated by Earlene Dyer. All club members will be selling tickets at $1 each or 6 tickets for $5.

For anyone wondering how we use our money- understand that our first responsibility is the upkeep of the Old Lagarto School House which was built in 1925 and is used as our club house. We have been providing money for two scholarships each year for area high school students and we regularly donate to a number of organizations.

In trying to have a little fun and just not be working so hard, the members are planning to visit a goat farm sometime soon. Other than that we have our soft aerobics on Tuesday mornings (did I say fun?). And, whenever there is a free minute you can hear the cards being shuffled for the next game of Rummy which is always challenging.

Next month the Community Club will meet on Oct. 11th with Jessica Keese and Peggy Barnett being the hostesses. Halloween is to be the theme and members are to dress in costume – or at least, in black and orange!

Remember, visitors can come to the School House on any Thursday. We have books you can borrow; we have books you can buy. Also, the building is available to be rented for that special party you have in mind! We are at 603 FM 534 in Lagarto.
