BEEVILLE — A horrid third quarter kept the Beeville Lady Trojans from going 2-0 on the season as the visiting Goliad Tigerettes escaped with a 48-47 win in the varsity girls basketball match-up on Friday evening.

Goliad started hot and poured in 20 first period points to run out to an eight-point margin 20-12 at the end of the first quarter. The Lady Trojans, behind the shooting of guard Victoria Elizade, pulled even at the half by outscoring the visitors 18-10 in the second quarter. It was all square at 30-30 at the halftime break.

The Lady Trojans had trouble in the third period. They hit for just three points in the quarter. The Tigers could not take too much of an advantage as the Beeville defense kept it fairly close by limiting Goliad to 10 points.

The girls from Goliad held a 40-33 lead heading into the final minutes.

The Lady Trojans rallied in the fourth quarter, relying on defense and Elizalde to lead the way back. The Beeville girls got close and scored 14 points, but the visitors got just enough, eight points, to stave off the charging Lady Trojans for the victory.

Elizalde led all scorers with 30 points on the night. Theresa Amador worked inside for six points for the Lady Trojans. Krystal Cuellar added five, and Tori Munoz managed three. Brianna Jackson contributed two, and Brennan Holder made one free throw.

The Lady Trojans hosted Aransas Pass on Tuesday night in another non-district encounter. The Beeville girls will compete at San Antonio Southside’s tournament, beginning on Thursday and running through Saturday.

The Beeville ladies will be back in San Antonio on Monday, Nov. 19, for a special appearance at the Spurs’ AT&T Center. The Lady Trojans will meet the Orange Grove Lady Bulldogs at 1 p.m.

All those holding tickets for the game will get to see the Lady Trojans and Lady Bulldogs and then will be admitted to see the Spurs take on the Los Angeles Clippers at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available through the A.C. Jones Athletic Department.
