Friday’s two games were against Rockport-Fulton and Incarnate Word Academy. In the game with the Pirates, the Trojans came from a 2-0 deficit to post a 3-2 win over the R-F boys.
The Pirates struck for single runs in the third and fourth, but the Beeville bats plated three runs in the top of the fifth to gain the victory.
Joe Rey Garza and Clay Blackwell each had two hits in the win. Cameron Kremers knocked in two of the three Beeville runs with a base hit. Marcus Gomez and Joey Grandos also hit safely for the Trojans.
Gomez got the win on the mound for the Beeville boys with five complete innings. Blackwell pitched two frames in relief.
“R-F is a good quality team, and even down by two, our players continued to play and fought back for the win,” said head coach Tom Carrera.
“Marcus Gomez pitched a heck of a game for his first ever varsity game.”
The second game of the day had the Beeville boys facing the Incarnate Word Academy squad. The Angels pitching was superb and shut out the Trojans in an 8-0 contest.
Rolly Ramon, Kremers, Daniel Amador (two) and Gomez had the five hits for the Trojans.
“Our bats ran cold and just never seemed to get anything going. The game also exposed our inexperience and lack of depth, which is something we will need to overcome quickly,” Carrera said.
The Trojans picked up play on Saturday with the New Braunfels Canyon Cougars the opponent. The Cougar bats were awake, and it was a 6-0 game after two innings with their plating three runs in each of the first two frames.
The Trojans’ pitchers limited the damage and allowed just one more run to the Cougars (in the fourth inning) the rest of the way. Beeville got on the scoreboard with a three-run outburst in the fifth but were held in check over the final frame in the six-inning contest.
Garza rapped two hits for the Beeville boys. Blackwell, Kremers, Ramon and Elijah Fuentes all had hits. Blackwell knocked in two runs, and Kremers picked up one RBI.
Kremers went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits and seven runs while striking out eight Cougars.
“New Braunfels Canyon is another quality team, and we got caught still asleep,” Carrera said.
“Kremers had a rough outing on the mound, and it didn’t help that we just wouldn’t make big plays behind him.”
The final game of the tournament pitted the tough Centurions from John Paul II on the field vs. the Beeville boys.
The JPII pitching blanked the Trojans through four innings while the JPII bats provided a two-run cushion. The Trojans plated their lone run of the game in the top of the fifth as Fuentes scored. The Centurions scored single runs in the fifth and sixth to make the final a 4-1 win for the boys from Corpus Christi.
Gomez pitched a complete game for the Trojans. Fuentes, Anthony Ruiz (2B) and Trey Alaniz got the Beeville base knocks.
“John Paul II, well everyone knows how good this team is and to play them to a 4-1 game showed ourselves how good we can be,” Carrera said.
“We can play with anyyet.”
The Beeville varsity will participate in the Mathis Pirate tournament this weekend.
