VICTORIA — The A.C. Jones Lady Trojan varsity basketball team improved its District 30-4A record to 2-0 on Friday night with an impressive 48-37 victory in the home of the West Lady Warriors.

The win upped the Beeville girls’ overall record to 15-3 on the year.

The first half had the Lady Trojans fighting an uphill battle against the Warriors. The home team was out front 12-5 after one period as the Beeville girls had trouble finding the basket.

The second quarter was the reverse of the first as the Lady Trojan defense stepped up and kept the Warriors in control, limiting the Victoria girls to eight points in the period while recording 12 markers for Beeville. It was a narrow advantage, 20-17, at the half for the West girls.

A few adjustments and a strong inside presence helped the Lady Trojans make a stand in the second half and overpower the Lady Warriors. Beeville hit for 15 third quarter points while stopping the Warriors and allowing just six West tallies. It was a 32-26 Beeville lead entering the final eight minutes.

The Lady Trojans continued to pull away with their strong inside game with Paige McKinney and Ciara Garcia controlling things in the paint and guard Victoria Elizalde scoring on an assortment of drives and jumpers down the stretch. The Lady Trojans outscored the Warriors 16-8 over the final eight minutes to capture the 48-37 win.

“We had to establish an inside game in order to control the game. Ciara and Paige played well down low and kept them off the boards,” said Lady Trojan head coach Katina Walker.

Elizalde finished with a team-high 17 points in the win. She also hauled in six rebounds and came up with three steals for the Lady Trojans. Garcia added 13 points and was a monster on the boards, pulling down 18 caroms against the Lady Warriors. Theresa Amador hit for six points and helped out on the glass with five rebounds. Brennan Holder added four markers and pulled down another five rebounds. Tori Muñoz dished out five assists and had three steals to go along with two points. Krystal Cuellar contributed another four points and McKinney produced two.

“We still have some work to do, because we made little mistakes in the last few minutes that can and will cost us later in district play if not corrected,” Walker said.

The Lady Trojans played a non-district contest in Gonzales on Tuesday night before getting back to the district battles on Friday when they host the Victoria East Lady Titans.
