The A.C. Jones High Lady Trojans have two members of their powerlifting team ready to go to the state meet on March 21 in the American Bank Center in Corpus Christi.

Leisa Garcia will be making the trip to compete in the 114-pound weight class. Garcia won her weight class at the region meet last weekend in Tuloso-Midway with a record-setting total of 745 pounds. Her bench press of 165 pounds also set a region record for her weight. Garcia will be going into the state meet as the No. 1 114-pound powerlifter in all of Texas.

Elizabeth Segovia will also compete at the state meet. She qualified with a three-lift total of 890 pounds in the super heavyweight division.

“Elizabeth Segovia is a promising freshman who will pick up valuable experience at the state meet,” said Trojan coach Alan Burkett.

Segovia’s total was a personal best for the young Lady Trojan and promises big things in the years to come.

Beeville’s Lataya Clay also competed at the region meet at T-M. Her three-lift total of 785 pounds in the 220-pound class was also a personal best but not enough to get her to state this year.

The boys’ regional meet is this weekend in Weslaco with competition on Saturday.

The Trojans will have Ben Castro, Thomas Smith, Dalton Torres and Genaro Trevino who will be doing their best at the region meet to qualify for the state boys’ competition in Abilene on March 28.
