Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) officials announced two construction projects are underway. The first project has been deemed a “safety bond” project as it was designed to enhance safety in Live Oak County on IH-37 where it meets with FM 799. The second project on U.S. 59 in George West is designed to enhance connectivity between U.S. 281 and IH-37.
The first project makes safety improvements to IH-37 at two sections on FM 799 north and south bound at IH-37 and at Edroy and IH-37. The safety feature of the project prevents cars from crossing the median at these sections on IH-37.
Lockhart Contracting Services, Inc. was awarded the contract to perform the work for an agreed price of $576,871.60.
Lockhart Contracting Services began setting up the signs for the construction zone last Wednesday (Nov. 25) and began actual construction on Monday (Nov. 30).
The second construction project on U.S. 59 in George West is part of an economic stimulus projects designed to enhance connectivity between U.S. 281 and IH-37.
Ballenger Construction was awarded the contract to perform the work during the July 2009 meeting of the Texas Transportation Commission for a contract price of $17,155,044. This project makes improvements to U.S. 59 from southwest of Lagarto Road to the recently completed four-lane divided highway of U.S. 59 northeast of George West.
When completed, the project will provide a four-lane boulevard section with left turn lanes at the intersection of U.S. 59 and U.S. 281 and at San Antonio Street.
Additionally, the construction project provides for the construction of an overpass at the existing at-grade Union Pacific railroad crossing as an added safety feature.
Construction operations are expected to begin shortly after Jan. 1. However, Ballenger Construction has already begun surveying operations throughout the limits of the project.
Questions related to the surveying operations, or any other aspect of the project, may be directed to Chris Caron, PE, TxDOT Alice Area Engineer, at 361-661-7072.
