The Bee County Boxing Club took four young local boxers to last weekend’s regional Junior Olympics tournament in Los Fresnos and all four made it to the finals. But, only two will be going to next week’s state meet back in Los Fresnos.

The local four included Ray Leija, Tony Cruz, Candy Cruz and Jacob Almaguer. As previously mentioned, all four made it to the finals in their respective divisions. Leija boxed in the 55-pound junior division and lost his title match on a close decision. Tony Cruz competed at 138 pounds in the senior division and also lost his title bout on a decision.

Candy Cruz boxed in the 125-pound intermediate class of girl boxers. Candy out-boxed and out-hit her opponent to advance to the state meet, earning the regional Jr. Olympic belt.

Almaguer was also successful in his title bout, earning a decision in the 125-pound intermediate boys’ class and the region championship.

The club is having a fund-raising BBQ on Saturday at Club 59 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to help defray their expenses in going to the state tournament. Any and all donations will be greatly appreciated.

Those interested in helping the young boxers can call Ameliono Gonzales at 361-542-7052 or Richard Gonzales at 361-343-1956.
