Sheriff Carlos Carrizales Jr. and Deputy Lt. Ronnie Jones said this week that deputies sent to that part of the county realized quickly they were involved in something strange.
Jones said Sgt. Kevin Behr and Deputy Ryan Treviño answered a call from the Beeville Police Department at about 5 p.m. Saturday.
When they arrived, they were told that six kangaroos had gotten loose from a pasture at that location owned by exotic animal dealer Body Knapp.
“There were four females, one young kangaroo called a ‘joey’ and a male that was more than six feet tall,” Jones said.
The animals had not gotten far, but Jones said it took Knapp and his assistants about an hour to get them back into the compound where he keeps his animals.
Knapp uses the property to hold numerous exotic animals for his business.
He transports exotic animals for ranchers and other operations that keep them.
