The visiting Victoria West Lady Warriors had to go eight innings on Tuesday night to best the Lady Trojans, 4-3, in the District 30-4A opener for both teams.

The visitors got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the first. The Lady Trojans evened things up in the bottom half of the third as Taylor Lawson reached and later scored on a throwing error on a bunt off the bat of Anyssa Barbosa.

A scoreless fourth went by but the visitors took advantage of two, two-out walks followed by a seeing-eye single for two runs in the top of the fifth to edge in front of the Lady Trojans, 3-1, heading into the scheduled final two innings.

The sixth inning went by peacefully for both squads and the Beeville girls were down to their last bats in the bottom of the seventh.

A one-out single by J.J. Hernandez brought the Beeville girls some hope. Barbosa then stepped to the plate and powered a shot over the left field fence for a two-run home run and tied the game at 3-3, sending the contest into extra innings.

The Warriors got a leadoff single and the runner took second on a miscue in left as the ball rolled by the Lady Trojan fielder.

A sacrifice bunt worked to perfection to move the runner to third and the batter wound up on second. A high pitch got by the Beeville catcher and the Victoria West runner scampered home with the go-ahead run. The lone run made it a 4-3 game.

Lynn Puente started off the bottom of the eighth with a single. A sacrifice bunt off the bat of Skylar Nelson looked to have moved Puente to second, but an alert Warrior infielder saw that the runner had overrun the bag and whipped a throw to second to nab Puente for the second out of the inning and remove the scoring threat.

The Warriors got the final out and took home a 4-3 victory. Beeville hurler Courtney Perez went the distance and took the loss.

In the JV contest, the local ladies pounded the visitors, 13-3, with a big first inning setting the tone. A grand slam homer from Tif’ni Puebla highlighted the game.

The Lady Trojans played host to the Sinton Lady Pirates on Friday afternoon. They will resume district play on Tuesday when the Victoria East Lady Titans pay a visit. The JV game will begin at 5 p.m. with the varsity contest beginning at 7 p.m.
