The Little Acorn Study Club met in the Media Room of our wonderful Dairy Queen in Three Rivers on Nov. 19 at 4 p.m. We had 15 members and two visitors present.
Our President Norma Newport was the Program Director. She introduced our guest speaker, school teacher and coach Doris Johanson.
Mrs. Johanson grew up and graduated from the Three Rivers High School in 1979. She attended Texas A & I in Kingsville and graduated in 1983 with a BS in Home Economics.
Doris was employed by Kenedy ISD in 1983 as a Home Economics teacher. While teaching in Kenedy, she went back to school and received her degree in History and has been teaching history ever since 1993. Doris was hired by the Three Rivers Independent School District as a History teacher/coach. She taught Texas History; World Geography; World History and U.S. History.
Doris gets to school at about 6:45 a.m. every morning. She brought some copies of the TAK tests so the club members could see what the students have to learn. To graduate, a student has to pass the TAK test as a junior.
Mrs. Johanson reported on exchange students who like to discuss the Holocaust and some who do not. She likes to greet the veterans on Veteran’s Day, but it was cancelled this year because it fell during 6-weeks tests. She stated the history books only go up to the Viet Nam War, so they discuss the Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan.
She was very gracious in answering questions asked by the club members. She was very informative and discussed the history of our country. Doris and her husband Shane Johanson have two children. Lauren, a graduate of Tech, is now attending law school in Houston. Their son Tanner is a 8th grader attending Three Rivers ISD.
Our hostesses were Mrs. Anne Esse and Mrs. Margaret Esse. The refreshments were sandwiches, cookies and drinks from the Dairy Queen.
The Little Acorn Study Club purchased the candy for Santa when he came to town on Nov. 30. Club member Joann Martin assisted as Santa’s helper and passed out the candy to all the children who came to meet Santa Claus.
Our next meeting will be Dec. 10 at Nolan Ryan’s Waterfront Restaurant for our Christmas Party.
