At about 4:10 p.m., Raul Moreno, 23, failed to yield at a stop sign when his white Dodge 4X4 crossed U.S. Highway 281 headed west.
An 18-wheeler driven by Enrique Avila, 52, headed south on Alternate U.S. Highway 281, hit Moreno’s pickup near the back mid section.
The pickup spun around and traveled sideways across the highway and struck a tree on the west side of Alternate U.S. Highway 281, according to Department of Public Safety Trooper Raul Garcia.
The pickup narrowly missed a utility pole and lost a fuel container from its bed on the highway.
Avila’s tractor-trailer rig came to a stop on the highway nearby with major damage to its tractor.
Moreno sustained back injuries and was transported to South Texas Regional Medical Center in Jourdanton by Acadian Ambulance Service, according to Garcia. Garcia added that Moreno appeared to not have life-threatening injuries.
Dave Mauricio who lives nearby the intersection said he was in his house when he heard the wreck.
“It was a loud boom, so I came out to see what it was,” he said. “For me to hear it way over (at my house), it had to be loud.”
In addition to the DPS and Acadian Ambulance Service, the Whitsett Volunteer Fire Department was at the scene and aided in freeing Moreno from his pickup.
Also, the Live Oak County Sheriff’s Office responded to the accident.
