Coastal Bend College is a state and federally funded institution of higher learning committed to the support and enrichment of our students and the communities we serve. We respect the rights of all our constituencies. But as a college, which exists first to serve its students, we have an especially sensitive mandate to protect and defend the rights of our students.
Our students have a right to expect a safe and secure learning environment free of harassment and abuse. What follows is Coastal Bend College’s policy from our student handbook, which is included in our current catalog and is available in print and online. This policy is consistent with that of other educational institutions: “Prohibited harassment of a student is defined as physical, verbal or non-verbal conduct based on the student’s race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability or any other basis prohibited by law that is so severe, persistent or pervasive that the conduct: 1. Affects a student’s ability to participate in or benefit from an educational program or activity or creates an intimidating, threatening, hostile or offensive educational environment; 2. Has the purpose or effect of substantially or unreasonably interfering with the student’s academic performance; or, 3. Otherwise adversely affects the student’s educational opportunities.”
It is unfortunate when we, as an institution, are not given the opportunity to address instances of dissatisfaction on the part of any constituency we serve. Open, earnest and sincere dialogue affords us the opportunity to improve our institution and better serve our customers.
