On Thursday, Nov. 15, the Karnes City Home and Garden Club met at the El Oso Water Supply meeting room.
The speaker for the afternoon was Eddie Salas, who is Chief of Police for the Karnes City Police Department. Chief Salas gave a very informative talk about “Safety at home, in town and while traveling”. First, Chief Salas cautioned all members present to take precautions when you know you will be out of town for a few days. Let your neighbors know about this, be sure to close your garage door, an alarm system is good, a good secure rod placed against your windows is helpful to keep thieves out. He also told those present to be on the lookout for slow moving vehicles traveling through your neighborhood. Write down the license plate and a description of the car. Dead bolts locked is very good for theft protection.
Be cautious about people wondering around the parking lots where you are shopping.
Chief Salas cautioned everyone about the fact that so many truckers are in a hurry to get their job done quicker and this can be dangerous. He advised that it is best to park your vehicle close to the entrance of the business. Never give out your social security number to anyone. Trim bushes in front of your home to keep burglars away.
Mary Louise Jonas who is in charge of the Veterans Wreaths Across America honoring our esteemed veterans told everyone about the special ceremony we are having in Karnes City in honor of our military soldiers to be held Saturday, Dec. 15 at 11 a.m. sharp at our Veterans Memorial Garden located directly across from our county courthouse. Mrs. Jonas also let everyone know that the special guest for this memorial will be Herb Hancock, our newly elected county attorney beginning the year 2013.
Maxie McNally gave a nice report about the “Sunshine” cards she recently sent for some members. The very nice home and yard of James and Phyllis Barnes who live on 721 Anona Street in Karnes City was selected as the Yard of the Month for November.
The meeting ended with members planning their annual Christmas Party to be held Friday, Dec. 14. The guest speaker for the January 17 meeting will be Marlane smith, who will speak about “Our local trees and plants”.
