Approximately 60 children, houseparents and other STCHM staff were able to enjoy the day together. The trip was the grand finale Christmas gift announced at the annual ConocoPhillips Share Your Christmas event held on STCHM’s Boothe Campus in December 2012.
STCHM staff member Patty Kinnamon was holding 5-year-old Christopher during the Shamu show.
“His eyes were as round as saucers when he saw Shamu for the first time,” Kinnamon said. “It was so much fun watching the little ones’ faces as they saw all the animals and sights.”
The older students and adults also enjoyed the Shamu show, and the teens were particularly excited about the amusement rides.
“My favorite thing was riding The Great White roller coaster,” 16-year-old Jasmine and 13-year-old Ariel said at once. It was Ariel’s first time to ride a roller coaster, and she is not likely to ever forget that moment!
ConocoPhillips Philanthropic Committee and friends not only provided the entrance fee for each person but also included spending money for games and meals.
“It was a complete package deal and such a great opportunity for our whole campus to participate in an off-campus activity together,” said Greg Huskey, STCHM Boothe Campus administrator. “Our single moms and their kids from our Marshall Ranch Family Care campus in Goliad also got to go.
“Many of our kids come from the Coastal Bend region, and getting to experience sea life in an amusement park setting firsthand was special for them. We are so thankful to ConocoPhillips for their continued dedication and thoughtfulness to our kids and staff.”
Programs offered by South Texas Children’s Home Ministries include a residential child care campus in Beeville, a family care residential campus for single moms and their children in Goliad, counseling offices in Corpus Christi and Victoria, job and life skills training for women in Corpus Christi, and international mission trip opportunities to minister to children and families in the Dominican Republic.
