St. Philip’s organist John Blackburn heard the famous musician when he performed at Southern Methodist University several years ago, then again at King’s College on Christmas Eve, 2002. Blackburn invited him to include Beeville on his upcoming American tour, and Cleobury accepted the invitation.
His U.S. tour also will take him to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Cleveland, Ohio; Archbishop Curley High School in Baltimore, Md.; Utah State University in Logan, Utah; and Seattle, Wash., where he will present a solo recital for the Seattle Symphony’s organ recital series.
Cleobury’s Beeville concert program includes J.S. Bach’s “Prelude and Fugue” in C minor and C major and his chorale “Sei gegrusset, Jesu gutig”; C.P.E. Bach’s “Sonata” in A minor; and Mozart’s “Fantasia” in F minor and major.
The concert is jointly sponsored by the Beeville Concert Association and St. Philip’s Music in the Nave series.
As director of music at King’s College, Cambridge and conductor laureate of the BBC Singers, Cleobury is associated with two of Britain’s most famous choirs and works with leading symphony orchestras and period instrument ensembles.
For 26 years, Cleobury was conductor of the Cambridge University Musical Society, one of the UK’s oldest music societies, a role in which he has directed the major works for chorus and orchestra as well as symphonic repertoire, highlights including Mahler’s Symphony No. 8 in the Royal Albert Hall and Britten War Requiem in Coventry Cathedral on the 50th anniversary of its bombing.
Cleobury has played in venues as diverse as the Cultural Centre, Hong Kong, the Conference Centre of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, Salt Lake City, and Haderslev Cathedral in Denmark.
Admission for adults who do not hold BCA season tickets is $10. Students through high school age are admitted free, as is any adult who accompanies two students. Coastal Bend College students will be admitted with their photo IDs.
Each Music in the Nave concert has a charitable focus; Rotary International’s “End Polio Now” campaign is the one designated for the Cleobury concert. Audience members will have the opportunity to donate at the end of the concert if they wish to do so.
