BEEVILLE – Both San Jacinto and Blinn Community College proved to be unrelenting in pursuit of doubleheader sweeps over the host Coastal Bend College Cougar softball teams on Friday and Saturday afternoons.

The San Jac Coyotes captured both ends of the Friday twinbill, 8-0 and 12-0, while the Blinn College Buccaneers defeated the Cougars on Saturday 15-4 and 11-3.

In Friday’s opener, the Coyotes jumped out to a 4-0 lead after the first inning and they coasted in from there. Single runs in the fourth through seventh frames applied the finishing touches. The San Jac offense was assisted by six CBC errors. San Jac pitching limited the CBC women to four hits in the game.

Marissa Treviño went 1 for 3 and stole a base for the Cougars. Yarelli Rios had one hit in three tries. Alyssa Smith had one hit in two official at bats while Stephanie Salinas collected the other base hit for CBC.

In the second game, the Coyotes’ pitching totally shut down the Cougars, allowing just one hit.

Rios provided the lone offensive spark for the hosts with a double, and she also earned a walk.

San Jac scored three runs in the first and a single run in the fifth to take a 4-0 lead. A big eight-run sixth finished off the contest. San Jac was helped by seven CBC miscues.

On Saturday, Blinn College took advantage of three big innings to put away the Cougars 15-4. The visitors had a three-run second, a four-run fourth and an eight-run sixth to dominate the Cougars.

CBC scored one run in the fourth and then added three runs in the final frame, but it was way too little and too late.

The Cougars did hit better as they got to the Blinn pitching staff for nine hits in the game. Briana Sandoval was 1-4 with a run scored. Kelsi Salziger also had one hit (double) and a run. Rios was a perfect 1-for-1 with two RBIs. Danielle Doria went 1-3 on the afternoon. Amy Macia picked up two hits in three trips to the plate.

Smith went 1-3 as did Michelle Southerland, and Southerland scored one run for CBC. Chelsea Guzman was 1-1 in the game while J.J. Hernandez and Treviño both scored runs.

In the season’s finale, the visitors posted an 11-3 win over the Cougars. Blinn got on the scoreboard first with a single run in the top of the first, added five more runs in the third, a single run in the fourth and four more Buccaneers crossed the plate in the sixth. CBC posted all three runs in the fifth frame.

Sandoval had one hit in three trips with a run and a stolen base to her credit. Hernandez was 1-3 with a run scored and an RBI. Samantha Cantu had a double in three plate appearances, knocking in one CBC run. Salziger, Southerland, Macia and Treviño all went 1-3 in the game. Christina Vasquez was 1-2 and pitched for the Cougars.

“It was a very tough year in which we struggled with too many errors and not getting the timely hits. We will need to raise our level of play and expectations next year if we are to be successful,” said CBC head coach Frank Morón.
