REFUGIO — Each of the commissioners appointed one representative to the Airport Advisory Committee Tuesday morning.

Pct. 1 Commissioner Ann Lopez appointed Philip Sanchez; Pct. 2 Commissioner Stanley Tuttle selected Ricky Piwetz; Pct. 3 Commissioner Gary Bourland chose Kenneth Wright; and Pct. 4 Commissioner Rod Bernal picked Anthony Daniel.

The court postponed providing a charge for the committee until the next meeting. Until an airport plan is in place for the county, the airport is ineligible for grants from FAA or TxDOT.

Earlier this year, the commissioners approved zoning for the airport, the first step needed to qualified for grants to improve and update the airport. So far, the county was required to turn more than $500,000 in grant funding from the FAA over to TxDOT.

The court also approved 15 paid holidays for county employees for the upcoming year, the same number as last year. The holidays include two days for Thanksgiving; three days for Christmas; and one day for New Years; Martin Luther King Jr. Day; Presidents’ Day; Fair Day; good Friday; Memorial Day; Independence Day; Labor Day; Columbus Day; and Veterans Day.

The court also agreed to allow outdoor burning until further notice. Chief Deputy Sheldon Wiginton said moisture values are better in the south end of the county than the north which remains dry.

The burn ban was lifted last month. No action will be taken on reinstating the burn ban for at least two weeks until the next commissioners court meeting.

Regarding county building rentals, the county will no longer refund deposits if tape is left behind on the furniture, walls or other places in the buildings.

“The major portion of users are very good but some use excessive amounts of tape,” Lopez told the court.

Rosemary Kelley, president of the county historical commission, requested that funds be released to the commission in order that bills may be paid. Kelley said in the past, members wrote personal checks to pay bills until the county released the funds.

The commission is set to elect new officers for the upcoming year at its next meeting.

The county attorney was also charged with making any necessary changes to the policy manual concerning hiring personnel and making status changes within the department.

In other matters, the court:

• Acknowledged the employment of Thu Y. Hua-Gonzales as a part-time clerk for the Justice of the Peace #1 office, effective Nov. 15 at a salary of $14,978 per year.

• Took no action on a request from the Tivoli Fire Department to use a county fire truck in a parade in Seadrift.

• Authorized the Indigent Defense Grant Program.

• Accepted $77,417 from Southcross Energy for damages and paving of Levien Road to the Southcross plant entrance.

• Entered into an interlocal agreement with Lubbock County to provide participation in a regional public defender for capital cases.

• Renewed contracts with Absolute Waste Services, Inc.; Champion Energy Services, LLC; and between the Texas Department of State Health Services for birth certification acknowledgement.
