The Eagles thundered their way past the Bartlett Bulldogs by a 50-20 margin - setting off a celebration for a town that’s been waiting for a playoff win since 1988.
The team will battle against arch-rival Bruni in the area playoffs Friday at 1 p.m. at Javelina Stadium at Kingsville A&M.
“The mood in the stadium was electric,” said Henry Balderamas. “Our fans outnumber the other other side two to one. You could see the excitement. At the five minute marker it was like New Years. The countdown had begun and we were ready to erupt.”
Coach Wade Miller has changed the tone in Woodsboro during his first year as athletic director and head coach - and the players couldn’t be happier.
"The kids executed our plan in an unbelievable way," Miller said. "We wore them down because we had more kids playing on one side of the ball."
Players like running back DeBray Bonner, quarterback Tyler Quesada and Jonathan Flores say their hard work is paying off.
The Eagles did it all on the field - including a defensive touchdown on a fumble before the end of the first half. A hook-and-ladder touchdown put them ahead 29-20 as Tyler Quesada hit Logan Moses with a short pass followed by Moses flipping it to Bonner who scampered down the sideline to pay dirt.
On the next play from scrimmage, the Bartlett quarterback pitched a pass into the waiting hands of Eagle Jared Martinez who took it to the 6. Two plays later, Quesada bulled his way through the middle for a 36-20 lead and a 29-point second quarter.
The two defensive plays helped put the game away for the Eagles.
Today, the Eagles are reviewing a Bruni game tape and the coach is optimistic.
"We're going to dow what we do best next Friday," Miller said
As the seconds ticked down on the scoreboard in New Braunfels, it was an early New Years for all the Eagle fans.
