CALALLEN — The Lady Trojan freshman basketball had a great night on Friday, capturing a 26-15 victory over the host Ladycats.
“This game had to be the best game the freshman girls have played the entire season. It was one of those games that everything seemed to click, and the girls responded well to the changing situations in the game,” said Lady Trojan freshman coach Abel Barrera.
The win was keyed by the ever-pressing defense run by the Lady Trojans.
“The intense pressure allowed us to get steals, and it opened up our transition game. The defensive pressure by our inside players also helped us prevent any easy goals from being scored in the paint,” Barrera said.
The rebounding efforts and defense from Janie Cano and Gabby Hyturria were noted by the coach. The defensive efforts of the Beeville backcourt of Samantha Salazar, Tiffany Vargas and Elaina Rodriguez helped keep the Ladycats in check.
“Our defensive sets and pressure provided a boost for us to be aggressive on the offensive side. The Wildcats ran a zone and man defense on us, and the Lady Trojans did a terrific job adjusting to the defenses,” Barrera said.
Vargas and Salazar led the Beeville scoring attack with 10 points each. Amber Garcia, Elaina Garcia and Janie Cano all contributed two tallies.
“The hard work and dedication the Lady Trojans have been putting in this season really showed with the victory over Calallen,” Barrera said.
