A 39-year-old Beeville man was sentenced to seven years in prison earlier this month after being found guilty of sexual assault of a child.

District Judge Joel Johnson sentenced Gilberto Martinez after the defendant pleaded guilty to the charge.

Martinez had been indicted on the first degree felony charge in connection with an incident that took place on July 15, 2004.

According to the indictment, his victim was a girl under the age of 14.

Investigators with the Beeville Police Department had filed the case in July 2009.

Martinez had been scheduled for jury trials on the charge in September 2009 and again on May 17 of this year.

He eventually changed his plea to guilty.

The defendant could have been sentenced to 99 years or life in prison and fined $10,000 following his conviction.

If it were Judge J. Johnson’s child, he would not be sitting Judge. For that matter, the case probably would not be in the Judicial District.

That sort of statement is not at all surprising from an ignorant, misinformed type that voted for “change”!

Were mitigating issues introduced, what was the weight of evidence as presented, know-better? Try to answer under one name this time.

Seven years for sex with a child - good to know. Remember citizens, this guy will be eligible for parole after half of his time (or 3 1/2 years) and he'll be back here in our community. Oh, I just feel so safe.
