Kirby, or "Pop-Pop" as he was known by his family and friends, was born on Feb. 20, 1933 in Goliad County, where he was a lifelong resident. After graduating from high school, he attended Victoria College and Texas A&M University. He joined the military and served as a radar instillation operator in the Korean War. He was a retired farmer and rancher, a greens keeper at the Goliad Golf Club and an amateur astronomer. Above all, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend to many.
"Pop-Pop" is survived by his sons, James K. Billo (Diane) of Victoria and William Robert (Billy Bob) Billo (Kristen) of Goliad; daughter, Mimi Loree Friedrichs (Mitchell) of Goliad; sister, Neva Nell McAdams of Schroeder; sister-in-law, Janie von Dohlen; grandchildren, Joshua James, Alison, Delaney, Ryder, Jake, Brinna and Kate; great-grandaughter, Audrey and one on the way; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Claudette Von Dohlen Billo; and parents, Herbert and Leora Post Billo Schmidt.
Honorary pallbearers were Joshua Billo, Ryder Billo, Jake Billo, John von Dohlen, Corey Billo and Jamie McAdams.
Private graveside services were held July 31, 2013 at 7 p.m. in Gelid.
