SKIDMORE — The Lady Cat basketball team is off and running this year with five wins against two losses in the early non-district part of the season.

The Skidmore-Tynan varsity recently competed in the Kingsville Academy tournament and made it to the title game before falling. The S-T girls beat Riviera 42-36, Woodsboro 47-35 and Robstown 48-28 to move through the ranks and into the championship game against the host squad.

The home court advantage helped the Kingsville Academy girls post a 51-44 victory to hand the Lady Cats in second place for their tournament work.

“In the championship game, we played very well, but the 15 easy baskets that we missed really hurt us along with some turnovers late in the game,” said head coach Joseph Grimes III.

“Early on in the first quarter, we fell behind by eight and really worked very hard to get back into the game in the fourth quarter.”

Two Lady Cats were named to the all-tournament team as Amber Hughlett and Mari Martinez were chosen for the honor by the coaches.

On Nov. 20, the S-T girls were able to gain a little payback against the KA squad. In a non-district match outside the tournament, the win went to the S-T girls, 44-30.

“In our second game against Academy, the girls played some really good defense and came out with some good shooting in the third quarter to help in beating Academy,” Grimes said.

The varsity and JV squads played Goliad on Tuesday night this week, and the varsity will participate in the Rockport-Fulton tournament over the weekend. The JV girls and freshman squads will play in the Beeville tournament that begins on Thursday afternoon.
