Lady Eagles topple 3A team

SINTON — The Lady Eagles were put to the test during a practice game Friday night in Sinton. The Lady Eagles prevailed with a 5 to 4 victory over the 22nd ranked class 3A team in the state.

Woodsboro’s playoff game beging this week. The Lady Eagles’ first opponent will be the Medina Bobcats in a three-game series..

The first game is set for Friday in Floresville at 7 p.m. Game two will be in Woodsboro at 6 p.m., and game 3, if necessary, will be Saturday 11 a.m. in Floresville.

The Lady Eagles were up for the challenge in a playoff-like atmosphere. The Lady Eagles capitalized on the Lady Pirate miscues in the first inning.

Ashley Barraza led off the inning with a walk. Taylor Perez then reached base on a bunt single that the pitcher threw over the right field foul fence, scoring Barraza from second and Perez ended up on third on the throw. Perez would then score on a wild pitch by the Sinton pitcher making the score 2 to 0.

The Lady Eagles gave up the lead in the bottom of the third making the score 2 to 3. The Lady Eagles would come up with two runs on the top half of the fifth inning making the score 4 – 3.

Barraza singled over the first baseman’s outstretched glove. Perez would then sacrifice Barraza to second. Hannah Carmichael then singled to left field and stole second on the next pitch to Malorie Nesloney.

With runner’s in scoring position, Nesloney hit a 2 RBI line shot to the right center field gap, scoring Perez and Carmichael.

The Lady Pirate’s tied the game in the bottom half of the fifth to make the score dead even, 4 to 4.

Still tied going into the top of the seventh inning, the Lady Eagles struck one more time on a two-out rally. Perez reached base on a single followed by a single by Carmichael.

Nesloney used her free-walk card to load the bases. With Toni Martinez at the plate, the Sinton pitcher unleashed a wild pitch that allowed Perez to score the winning run from third.

Nesloney then shut down the Sinton Lady Pirates in the bottom half of the seventh inning. Nesloney struck out 10 and gave up just 1 earned run.

Barraza went 1-3, 2R, 2SB, T.Perez 3-3, 2R, 1RBI, 1SB, Carmichael 1-2, 1R, Nesloney 1-3, 3RBI. Playing good defense were Toni Martinez, Kayse McCool, Bria Brown, Kati Perez, Jennifer Elizardo, Jamie Wilson, and courtesy runners Kendall Wendland and Anna Vega.
