BEEVILLE — The Victoria West Lady Warrior soccer team was at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Friday night to finish the preseason scrimmage sessions in prelude to the regular soccer season that began on Tuesday evening.

The Lady Trojans played the good host and kept the match scoreless over the first 40 minutes, but struck for two goals in the second half to capture the scrimmage 2-0 over the Warriors.

Both teams showed well in the first half but neither team could get a shot by the goalkeepers. Emma Downing was guarding the net for the Lady Trojans.

Heather McKinney opened the scoring with a kick that found the back of the net early in the second half. Annisa Cantu assisted on the play with a centering kick that helped set up McKinney on the near right side of the field.

A few minutes later, Kennedy Treviño picked up the other Beeville goal on a close-in rebound off the Warrior goalkeeper and her kick also found the back of the net on the far side.

The Lady Trojan defense allowed few shots on goal the second half. Taylor Castillo, Sydney Wesson, Claire McKinney and others helped preserve the shutout and keep the Warriors away from Downing.

The A.C. Jones ladies open their regular season on Friday with the non-district Victoria tournament that will conclude with the finals late Saturday afternoon. The first home match is on Jan. 15 against Tuloso-Midway. District play begins on Feb. 12 when the Lady Trojans travel to Floresville to meet the Jaguars.
