The freshman squad jumped out to a big first period lead, 14-3, over the young Lady Panthers and then went on to an easy 35-13 victory.
The Beeville defense was strong all night. The Lady Trojans were aggressive and shut out the visitors in the second quarter while scoring 10 points of their own. The Lady Trojans led 24-3 at the half.
The pace slowed in the second half as both teams had trouble finding the range on their shots. The Beeville girls outscored the Panthers 11-10 over the final two quarters to capture a 35-13 victory.
“I am really proud with the team’s effort and hustle the girls displayed last night. The team has been having productive practices, and it shows on game day,” said freshman coach Abel Barrera.
“I was impressed how these freshman girls were competing and took coaching during practice and on game day.”
Samantha Salazar led the Beeville scoring with 14 points in the contest. Tiffany Vargas added six points as did Desiree Mendez. Valerie Perez hit for two, while Janie Cano and Gabriella Hyturria contributed one point apiece.
The freshman and JV girls are competing in the Bishop Lady Badgers tournament this weekend. Their first game was against Banquete.
The JV game was close through the first quarter as AP led by one, 9-8. The Lady Trojans upped their defensive pressure and caused a few turnovers in the second period that led to a few easier baskets for the home team. The Lady Trojans recorded 13 second quarter points while holding the Panthers to just seven. It was a 21-16 game at the half with the Beeville girls in the lead.
The Lady Trojans kept up the scoring pace in the third period and added 15 points to their side of the scoreboard. The Beeville defense was even better, caging the Panther offense and limiting their production to five third quarter points. That made it a 36-21 contest.
The pace slowed over the final minutes as the Lady Trojans looked to eat up the clock. Their motion offense was effective enough to limit the scoring to a total of just 12 points for the two teams combined. The Lady Trojans got seven of those points to finish off the Panthers 43-27.
Audrey Carranco led the Beeville scoring with a game-high 16 points. Lisa Tamez followed with seven tallies while McKenzie Harvey and Sophia Galindo each contributed six in the win.
