GEORGE WEST — The Lady Trojan varsity basketball team used a good measure of speed and defense to down the host Lady ’Horns on Friday night, 51-41.

The Beeville girls jumped out to an early lead with an 11-2 run to start the game. The visitors held a 15-7 lead at the end of the first quarter as the Lady Horns fought to get back in the contest.

That eight-point lead grew to a 13-point margin early in the second quarter as the Beeville girls opened up a 20-7 advantage by scoring the first five points of the period.

George West got as close as seven points at 20-13 with 6-0 run, but the Lady Trojans closed the second quarter by adding one more point to their margin as they took a 25-17 lead into halftime.

Beeville’s Ciara Garcia paced the Lady Trojans in the first half with 11 points, working deep inside and getting several baskets on put-backs.

The Lady Trojan defense continued to pressure the ball and created GW turnovers that led to transition baskets in the third quarter. The visitors hit for 13 points in the third while holding the home team to nine. The Lady Trojans held a 38-26 advantage.

The Lady Horns were able to reduce two points from the Beeville lead, but it wasn’t enough, as the JHS ladies captured the 51-41 victory.

Bethany Brysch kept the Lady Horns in the game in the second half with a fine performance, knocking down an assortment of short jumpers for 12 second half tallies for GW.

Garcia led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 16 points. Tori Muñoz, Theresa Amador and Krystal Cuellar each contributed eight tallies. Victoria Elizalde added seven points, while Paige McKinney and Brianna Jackson both made two.

Brysch finished the night with a game-high 18 points for the Lady Horns. Marley Snider followed with eight markers. Erin Snider sank seven points. Kaylee Brysch contributed four, while Mary Cansino and D’Nessa Franklin recorded two apiece.

The Lady Trojans traveled to Stockdale on Tuesday night to tangle with the Lady Brahmas and will compete in the Bishop tournament this weekend.

The Lady Horns played London at home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. and will play in the Tuloso-Midway tournament later this week.
