BISHOP — The trip to Bishop over the weekend worked out well for the Lady Trojan varsity basketball team, resulting in a few wins and another first place trophy to put in the trophy case.

The Lady Trojans went undefeated at the tournament to improve to a 13-3 record on the year. District 30-4A play began on Tuesday night when the Gregory-Portland Wildcats traveled to Beeville to test the Lady Trojans.

Early round games were not made available, but the Beeville girls faced the John Paul II Lady Centurions in the semifinal contest on Friday.

The Lady Trojan defense delivered a shutout in the first period and the Beeville girls took a 16-0 lead. The Lady Trojans kept up the pressure, but the JP II girls recorded six second period markers. However, they fell behind even further as the Lady Trojans added another 16 points to lead 32-6 at the half.

The Lady Trojans fired in 18 third quarter points to secure the game, adding eight more points to their advantage. It was all Beeville, 50-17. The Lady Trojans slowed their pace and struck for 11 fourth quarter tallies. JP II recorded nine points in the final quarter to make the final score 61-26.

Victoria Elizalde led the team with 21 points, Ciara Garcia added seven points and Theresa Amador and Sophia Galindo each managed five markers.

The victory against John Paul II put the Lady Trojans in the championship game on Saturday against the host Bishop Lady Badgers.

The Lady Trojans played a fast-paced game and produced 19 first period points. The Lady Badgers recorded 11 to fall behind by eight. But, the Lady Trojans were just warming up. The Beeville defense upped the pressure and the Lady Trojans couldn’t seem to miss as they scorched the nets for 28 points in the second quarter. Bishop added another 11 to trail 47-22 at halftime.

The Beeville girls slowed things down in the third period and Bishop cut two points off the Beeville lead by out-scoring the Lady Trojans 11-9. It was still all Beeville, 56-33, entering the final quarter.

The Lady Badgers tried to get back into the contest. They poured in 26 fourth quarter points while the Beeville girls added another 16 markers to make the final a little more respectable at 72-59.

Elizalde led JHS with 20 points in the championship game. Amador scored 18, and Tori Munoz recorded nine.

The Lady Trojans wound up their non-district schedule with this tournament and began District 30-4A play on Tuesday when the G-P girls came to town. On Friday night, the Lady Trojans will travel to Victoria to meet the West Lady Warriors.
