Lady Trojan Victoria Elizalde makes a move in the paint during the first half of Tuesday night’s bi-district win over the Medina Valley Lady Panthers. The 48-34 victory advanced the Lady Trojans into last night’s (Friday’s) area round game with the Moody Lady Trojans. That game was in Beeville at 6 p.m.
The Lady Trojans captured a 48-34 win over the District 29-4A Medina Valley Panthers on Tuesday night to advance to the area round of the playoffs.
Both teams wanted to run and a case of the playoff jitters was probably most evident on the Lady Panthers’ side. Turnovers and more turnovers highlighted play. Several times down the court, it was back and forth basketball, but neither team got a shot.
Behind the scoring and ball handling of Victoria Elizalde, the Lady Trojans slowly gained some control of the contest. The Beeville girls led 13-7 after the first quarter and then took a 25-16 lead into halftime.
Beeville’s harassing defense of Tori Munoz, Elizalde and Brennan Holder kept the Medina Valley guards off stride and throwing the ball away. The inside play on the boards of Ciara Garcia, Theresa Amador and reserves Paige McKinney and Sophia Galindo kept the Panthers from converting on second chance baskets most of the night.
The Lady Trojans built their lead into double figures early in the third period and took a 36-23 advantage into the final quarter. The Lady Panthers tried to make a run at the Lady Trojans, but turnovers down the stretch and some missed shots prevented any serious threat to the Beeville girls.
McKinney and Galindo provided offensive sparks in the second half as did freshman Audrey Carranco. Head coach Katina Walker also got some timely minutes from reserve Brianna Jackson, who came in to relieve Munoz when the feisty Beeville point guard found herself in early foul trouble.
The Lady Trojans added 12 points to their score in the final quarter and held the Panthers to 11 to claim a bi-district championship trophy.
The victory advanced the Lady Trojans into the second round of the postseason. It was a Trojan vs. Trojan affair as the Corpus Christi Moody team provided the opposition. That game was played on Friday night in Beeville’s Marion P. Horton gymnasium at 6 p.m.
