Kenedy coaches say the Kenedy Leopards volleyball team had an awesome week accomplishing something that hasn’t been done in Kenedy girls’ athletics in a long time.

For the first time in ten years, the Kenedy girls earned a trip to the volleyball playoffs. On Tuesday, October 30, they beat Charlotte in 3 games on Charlotte’s home court. With game scores of 25-12, 25-15, and 25-17, the Leopards won the Bi-District title. They then took on Benavides in Woodsboro on Saturday, November 4. The Leopards won that match also in 3 hard fought games, 25-22, 25-23, and 28-26 and clinched the Area Championship. Jacki Zapata led the Leopards in kills for the

week with a total of 15 followed by Saren Sutton with 11, Karly Nichols 9, Teryn Schmidt 7, and Lauren Hernandez 1. Schmidt scored 11 aces, Zapata 4, Hernandez 3, Sutton and Becca Brown 2 each and Nichols 1. Leading in digs was Lillie Vickery with 9, Laurel Vickery and Schmidt with 4 each, Nichols 3, and Hernandez, Sutton, and Zapata 2. Brown had an amazing 47 assists for a two game total.

The team which consists of five Seniors, five Juniors, and one Sophomore has a record 11-4 since beginning district play. The team is coached by Niki Fudge who is assisted by James Hinojosa and Nichole Watts. They have challenged and inspired the time with “When others say we can’t, we say watch us!”

The Leopards will play Three Rivers in the Regional Quarterfinal round on Tuesday, November 6 at 7:30 p.m. in Poteet.
