On Thursday, the JV team played in Goliad and proved themselves throughout some very tough matches.
In boys’ singles, Mario Rodriguez defeated opponent Richard Thomas (Goliad) 8-3 before falling to Refugio’s Brent Davis (4-6, 0-6).
Mario then defeated Runge’s Jonathan Espinoza in a split set match (6-7, 6-3, 10-5) claiming the third place medal.
Cody Bartlett fell to Runge’s Patrick Jones (3-8) before falling to Goliad’s Richard Thomas (5-8).
In boys doubles, John Driskill and Tyler Kerr teamed up to play Runge’s Villarreal/Gutierrez (0-8) and Woodsboro’s Moses and Payne (3-8).
Jesse Cansino and Wesley Iley also teamed up to play Hurt/Kindler (Gonzales) but fell short 3-8.
Cansino and Iley then played a consolation match and came up short against Aransas Pass’s Miles/Thomas (3-8).
In girls’ singles, Taylor Brown defeated Viviana Perez (Aransas Pass) 8-4, lost to Samantha Gardner (Cuero) 6-4, 6-0 but came back to defeat Kayle Fullingham (Gonzales) 6-4, 6-2 to claim third place.
Lauren Cordani suited up for girls’ singles, but fell short to Gonzales’ Kayle Fullingham in a tie breaker match (7-8). Cordani also played a consolation match against Viviana Perez (Aransas Pass) but was defeated 2-8.
In the girls’ doubles division, Salina Ruiz and Amy Garza teamed up to play Runge’s Torres/Sanchez but fell short 0-6, 0-6 before defeating Thompson/Thompson (Aransas Pass) 6-2, 6-2 and claiming third place. The JV team competed strong and played well.
In the varsity division, only three players were taken, but everyone played some tough tennis.
In the boys’ singles division, Frank Alvarez lost to Joseph Boone (Goliad) in a tiebreaker match (7-8) and then fell to Goliad’s Wade Williams 4-8 in the consolation match.
In girls’ singles, Sarah Whitley claimed the second place medal after defeating Tasha Phillips (Goliad) and Caysi Holt (George West) while Caysi Holt claimed third place after defeating Tasha Phillips (Goliad).
The varsity tennis team will next travel to Seguin to compete in the Stockdale tournament on March 4-5.
