VICTORIA — This past weekend Beeville’s Moreno 8A basketball team took first place in the Mike Rivera Basketball Tournament.

The young Trojans made an opening statement on Friday night as they beat their first opponent, the Port Lavaca Travis squad, 50-20 to move on into the winners’ bracket

High scorers in that opening game were Adolf Garcia with 24 points and James Graham with eight tallies. Augie Canas and Jordan Cantu each recorded six markers.

Victoria Howell met the young Trojans on the court on Saturday morning. The final score was all Beeville, 44-24.

High scorers for that game were Garcia with 11, Justin Cantu with 10, Jordan Cantu and Nick Gonzales each with five.

The victory moved the Trojans into the championship game where they faced the host team, Victoria Cade.

The title game did not come easy as the Trojans found themselves in foul trouble early in the first quarter with three starters having two fouls each.

The Trojans faced a good team, but pulled together to the end and came up on top with a final score of 41-36.

“This one was by far the hardest game and biggest test this young group has had in their two-year tenure at Moreno,” said MMS coach Ricardo Maldonado.

Canas led the scoring with nine points. Garcia added eight tallies and Gonzales contributed six points.

“It was an awesome feeling with the game so intense and having the kids rally together to support their teammates. Defensively, Steve Barrera, Michael Virrata, Bryan Reyna and Jacob Castro stepped up big in the tournament,” Maldonado said.

The 8A Trojans sport an undefeated 7-0 record overall on the season and are 3-0 in district play.

“I’m very proud of this group for their efforts they have displayed and their motivation to keep on getting better,” Maldonado said.

The young Trojans faced Tuloso-Midway on Monday night and will travel to Flour Buff next Wednesday to play Flour Bluff.
