Mr. Whitwell was born Jan. 20, 1930, in Pearsall to C. S. and Ila Lindholm Whitwell. He grew up in Pearsall and Cotulla, attended and played football at Tarleton State Junior College and earned a degree in agriculture at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
He and Wanda, his wife of 45 years, spent their early years in Pettus where he taught Ag and was high school principal. In 1965, he moved back to Cotulla to become a full time rancher and cattleman. After Wanda’s death in 1995, he married Sylvia Anderson of Pettus. They enjoyed travels to Colorado and Alaska and their harbor house in Port Mansfield, where he had fished for many years. He loved to hunt, fish and tell stories of his life, adventures and friends. He was a member of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, Texas Farm Bureau and First United Methodist Church of Cotulla.
Survivors include his wife of 16 years, Sylvia Whitwell of Cotulla; a sister, Shirley Kennedy of San Angelo; two daughters, Carolyn (Buddy) Morgan of Cotulla and Michelle (David) Pokorny of St. Louis, Mo.; a son, Michael (Jamie) Whitwell of Cotulla; and three grandchildren, Morgan Hynds, Ryan Armstrong and his Clayton Pokorny.
A memorial service was held at the First United Methodist Church in Cotulla at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 11.
