Dear Editor,

Did you know that in 1852 the Goliad Masonic Lodge was formed by nine men who came to settle in Goliad from Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia, Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee and North Carolina? They were made up of Indian Fighters, Texas Rangers, school teachers, doctors, clergymen, farmers and, most importantly, family men.

One of them even served on the committee to oversee the construction of the Goliad County Courthouse, which began construction in 1854, the same year that the Masonic Lodge building was completed.

If you would like to know more about these civic-minded individuals, their names and a history of our Masonic Lodge in Goliad, please mark your calendars for Saturday, March 16. At 3 p.m., we are inviting the general public to attend a lantern-lit get-together to recite the history of our lodge and to introduce these individuals by members of our lodge playing their part.

Didn’t you ever wonder what the lodge building looks like upstairs and who started the lodge 160 years ago?

William P. Montague
