The 7B squad had trouble hitting their shots early and trailed 15-12 entering the final quarter. Then the shots started to fall for the Beeville boys, and their defense picked up to the point of completely shutting out the Hornets over the last quarter.
The young Trojans hit for nine fourth quarter points to win going away at 21-15.
“Our defense really kept us in the game, and allowed us to take over in the final period,” said MMS coach Tim San Miguel.
Wyatt Blackwell led the team with seven points. Aaron Gonzales finished with six while E.J. Valdez contributed four. B.J. Barrera and John Davis each came in with a bucket for two tallies.
The 8B team used a tough defense to jump out to an early 10-point advantage over the Hornets. The Moreno boys never trailed and went on to post a 24-16 victory over their hosts.
A.J. Gomez led the Beeville scoring with nine points. Jesse Gutierrez made four markers. Johnathan Carrillo finished with three. Luz Garza, Timothy Rincon, Alfredo Benavides and Audrick Moore scored two points apiece.
“Overall, it was our defense that preserved the win,” said MMS coach Oscar Vasquez.
The 8B boys sport a overall record of 7-1 and a district mark of 4-1. The MMS boys play their final game of the year on Feb. 4 when the Kingsville Brahmas visit Beeville.
