SKIDMORE – Pitching and defense are of major importance in baseball.

The Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats got great pitching from Jonathon Hernandez on Friday against the Pirates, but the defense slipped a little, and the Mathis boys capitalized for a 3-0 victory.

“We wasted a great pitching performance by Jonathan. We had one inning where we misplayed a ball and then made an error which cost us the game,” said head coach Cody Fields.

“We lost our focus at the plate a little. We settled down but couldn’t recover.”

Hernandez pitched six innings, giving up two earned runs, and struck out four Pirate batters. Brandon East was 1-2 at the plate for the Bobcats. T.J. Amador had one hit in three trips in the loss.

On Saturday, the Banquete Bulldogs looked invincible at the plate as everything dished up by the Bobcat hurlers found a hole and went for a base hit in the 21-6 ’Cat loss.

A big eight-run first set the stage for the game. The Bulldogs added five more runs in the second for a 13-2 lead over the S-T boys, who had scored two in the bottom of the first.

Banquete struck for a single run in the third, three more in the fourth and four runs crossed the plate for the Bulldogs in the fifth.

S-T got another two runs in the third and duplicated the run production in the fifth for their six runs. Banquete pounded out 14 hits and took advantage of five Bobcat errors.

The S-T offense was led by Hernandez, who went 2-3 with a run scored, two RBIs and two stolen bases. East was 1-2 with a run scored and an RBI and a stolen base.

“We came out really flat after the tough loss Friday night. We fell behind, big, early. We did a pretty good job at the plate,” Fields said.

“We had good at bats and never gave up at the plate, but we couldn’t find an answer on the mound and in the field. Banquete hit every pitch we threw at them.”

The Skidmore-Tynan Bobcats were in George West to tangle with the tough Longhorns on Tuesday night. On Friday evening, the Bobcats will host the Odem Owls.
