On the road in Paris, Texas, on Wednesday night, the Cougars defeated the Paris College Dragons 71-63. The Dragons were champs of the Northern District of Region XIV last year and are a good team again this season.
“It’s a big win for us a team. We shot the ball really well the first half, and in the second half, we made baskets when we needed them the most,” said Cougar head coach Larry Mendez.
The CBC men led by 17 points, 42-25, at the half as the Cougar defense was too tough for the Dragons. The Cougars led all the way and withstood a late Dragon rally to win by eight, 71-63.
Brandon Golden led the Cougar scoring with 20 points on the night. La’Darrien Williams recorded 14, and Derrick Little contributed nine. Donald Dallas also hit for nine points, while Brandon Hairston added eight tallies.
On Saturday, in the friendly confines of the Cougar gym, the CBC team demolished the visiting Bossier Parish Cavaliers with a strong first half performance. The CBC men held a comfortable 50-23 led after the first 20 minutes. The final was a 84-67 victory to push their overall record to 7-1 on the year.
“I guess you could say we let up a little in the second half, but, overall, we are continuing to play well. Our defense has really been coming along as of late, and we have been shooting the ball extremely well both on the road and here at home,” Mendez said.
Golden again led the team in scoring with 27 points. Little added 17, while Williams joined them in double figures with 13. Dallas added nine points, and post Shane Minnick supplied seven.
The perfect 3-0 mark in region play ties the Cougars for first place with Navarro College and Lamar. The Cougars will be back on the road tonight for a contest against Navarro in Corsicana to help narrow the division race.
“It will be a big test for us. Our next home game will also be a big test for us as well. We play against Kilgore College on Saturday at 2 p.m.,” Mendez said.
