S-T ’Cats win Karnes City Badger tourney title

KARNES CITY — The Skidmore-Tynan varsity boys basketball team is finding early season success as the Bobcats raced through last weekend’s Karnes City Badger tournament undefeated to claim the championship.

On Thursday, the Bobcats defeated LaVernia in a close game 62-57 and then polished off the Stockdale Brahmas later in the day, 75-46.

On Friday, the ’Cats chased their host Badgers out of the gym with a relatively easy 55-36 victory.

In Saturday’s first game, the Bobcats overwhelming the KC junior varsity squad, 59-8, to advance into the championship round against San Marcos Baptist Academy.

The finale was a closely played contest, but the Bobcats emerged with a 72-66 victory to lay claim to the tourney’s championship title.

S-T guard/wing Eric Schumacher finished the championship game with 26 points. Zeke Huerta added 13 markers, and Aaron Hughes and Erasmo Huerta also were in double figures with 11 each in the win. Brandon East recorded six points, and Jonathan Hernandez contributed two points for the Bobcats.

Schumacher was named the tournament’s most valuable player, while East and Huerta were selected to the all-tournament team for their play over the three-day event.

“The players gave a good effort and pulled through to win some difficult games and the tournament championship,” said S-T head coach Adam Wollam.

The Bobcats traveled to Riviera on Tuesday night to meet the SeaHawks. The S-T boys will compete at this weekend’s Bishop Badger tournament and will look to add another championship trophy to their collection.
