“Our S-T Bobcats played well this last Friday, with significant improvement, but with much more improvement to go as we continue district play. We are proud of our boys,” said head coach Dan Garza.
The game was marred by a total of 11 turnovers combined for both teams. The Freer passing game was set back with six interceptions and they lost one of four fumbles. The Bobcats suffered one interception while losing three of four fumbles.
S-T jumped in front with 10 first quarter points as Jeremy Byrd got the first score of the night on a run that made it 7-0 with Gavin Vandever’s PAT kick. Vandever then blasted a 40-yard field goal later in the first period to put the Bobcats ahead 10-0.
S-T running back Rudy Hernandez made it a 17-0 contest with a second period scamper to allow the Bobcats to go into the locker rooms at the half with a 17-0 lead.
Quarterback Zach Mengers hit receiver Derek Boggess on an eight-yard scoring strike in the third quarter to raise the S-T lead to 23-0 as the extra point kick failed.
The Bobcats put the game way out of reach with another TD in the fourth quarter on a Mengers run. Vandever’s kick was true and the Bobcats had a 30-0 lead with just a few minutes left in the game.
S-T preserved the shutout with one last interception. The Bobcat defense got one last takeaway as defensive back Boggess stepped in front of an errant pass from Freer QB Jacob Cantu, five yards deep in the Bobcat end zone, and ran all the way into the Freer end zone for a 105-yard interception return for the final score.
The final was 37-0 with Vandever’s kick splitting the uprights on the PAT.
Byrd led the Skidmore rushing game with 15 carries for 89 yards. Rudy Hernandez rushed for 27 yards on six carries. Mengers was five of 12 with one interception in the passing department for 83 yards.
The Bobcat defense held the Freer rushers to just 72 yards on 25 attempts. The Buckaroos passed for 120 yards on 16 completions in 50 tries with six interceptions by the S-T defense.
Both teams now sport a 2-3 overall record for the year and both are 1-1 in district play.
The Bobcats travel to Premont on Friday night to meet the Cowboys.
“We take on Premont this week and plan to focus on eliminating the mistakes we had against Freer. Premont will field a young, aggressive team,” Garza said.
“Our boys will have to play good fundamental football to come out on top.”
