Chris Soza, former Beeville ISD athletic director and A.C. Jones High School head coach, and family had a Thanksgiving weekend that no one in the family will probably ever forget.
“I don’t think I could have asked for a better Thanksgiving week,” said the former Trojan football coach.
The weekend started off well on Friday afternoon as the Alice Coyotes (Soza’s alma mater and now he’s the head coach and AD in Alice) confronted the Calallen Wildcats in the second round of the state playoffs here at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Dodging lightning, thunder and rain, the Coyotes got the better of the Wildcats 17-7 to advance to the regional match-up with Cedar Park.
“It is always our goal to be coaching during Thanksgiving week...and to top it off, we were victorious on Friday afternoon against a very good Calallen football team,” Soza said.
Then on Saturday, it was up to San Antonio for a little more football and family.
“I was able to mix business with pleasure on Saturday. I attended UTSA’s season finale and saw the Roadrunners defeat Texas State,” Chris said.
Former Trojan QB Eric Soza (Chris’ son) led his UTSA Roadrunners to a season finale victory over Texas State University in the Alamodome. The 38-31 win concluded a remarkable season for Soza and the Roadrunners, finishing 8-4 in only their second season of existence. The ’Runners were 3-3 in the Western Athletic Conference, their one-year temporary home before moving into Conference USA next year.
Eric missed two games with a hip injury, but still had more than 2,000 yards passing and wound up with a passing efficiency rating of 142.2.
A little more pleasure on Saturday came right after the win over the Texas State Bobcats. Eric went into the stands and proposed to his longtime girlfriend Audrey Jones, former A.C. Jones valedictorian and herself an athlete, daughter of Randy Jones and Julie Hardwick.
“She said ‘Yes’, so she must be crazy,” Eric said. “I’m just happy,” he added in a story for the Caller-Times. The event was witnessed by Chris and added to a great afternoon in San Antonio.
“Finally, I witnessed my son propose to the love of his life after the game,” Chris said.
“So, yeah, it was a very busy but memorable Thanksgiving week. I really have a lot to be thankful for.”
But then, back to work. That evening, Saturday, Chris and a few other members of his Alice coaching staff traveled to San Marcos to scout their next playoff opponent, the Cedar Park Timberwolves, in their battle with Kerrville.
The Coyotes (9-3) and the Timberwolves (10-2) square off in their region battle on Friday at 7:30 p.m. in San Antonio’s Heroes Stadium.
