The narrative is a reminder of the mysterious and frightening power of God. We may wonder at the reaction of the townsfolk. But we have gone so far out of our way to make Jesus user friendly, that often times he comes off more as “my pal Jesus” than the incarnation of the One who created the heavens and the earth, which makes Jesus more amenable to our will and control rather than being the one who lives and breathes in us and gives us life. We may also commiserate with the man from whom the demons were cast and want to remain contentedly at Jesus’ feet rather than being sent out to witness to what God has done for us. But just as he was sent, so are we. Go in peace to love and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.
