The suspect, Joe Sauceda, 33, of Robstown and Refugio Stripes clerk Nichole Viau, 27, were “working in cahoots,” Lopez said.
Viau’s federal case is pending, Lopez said.
Sauceda was passing counterfeit $100 bills to Viau, 27, who helped Sauceda pass 15 $100 counterfeit bills by issuing money orders.
Lopez said Stripes Truck Stop Store manager Mario Hernandez reported to Refugio police what appeared to be the passing of counterfeit $100 bills by an unidentified male on June 29.
Lopez said his department led by Investigator Danny Madrigal discovered the suspects and method of passing the bogus money.
Lopez said the case was forwarded to U.S. Secret Service Agent Dan Morales to be presented to the U.S. federal prosecutor in Corpus Christi for the filing of criminal charges and prosecution of Sauceda and Viau.
