Tonight’s anniversary show is not only the biggest show of the year, country-music fans will be hard-pressed to find a night of live music with the quality that these entertainers bring to the stage.
Last week, organizer Jay Monrad said three charter buses will be arriving so the doors will open at 5 p.m. rather than 5:30.
The Fierova family will have delicious plates and hot sandwiches at reasonable rates so come early to find the best seats. I make it a point not to eat beforehand.
Especially wonderful about tonight’s show is a special performer - Mia Orosco whose father, Nonie Orosco graduated Refugio High School, attended St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and went to Vietnam where he was a decorated helicopter pilot.
Mia is a world class fiddler who can play classical violin as well. She is also the granddaughter of Onofre Orosco of Refugio and the late Alma Orosco who worked in the courthouse for many years.
Besides Mia, the talent booked for tonight’s show is super.
David Crawford, who played with the band for years and organized the Stage Door Canteen aboard the USS Lexington, is truly the king of the keyboards. Another former musician Gerry Payne will be there with his sax and fiddle.
Jo Marie Prukop of Bishop and Stacey Stark of Portland are real crowd-pleasers as well.
And, of course, all the award-winning members of the Country Opry Band will be playing back-up for all the guests as well as taking the microphone for selections.
Jay and I have visited many times about the absence of local residents at the monthly shows in contrast to the hundreds of visitors who consistently attend the show.
The Opry has provided more than $50,000 in scholarships to the graduating seniors from the three schools in the county. Five dollars is a small price to pay for live entertainment along with the good work the group provides.
Even more flabbergasting — door prizes are given away during the intermission.
If anyone has been thinking about attending the show, I know one thing for certain - you’ll be glad you did.
See you tonight at the Expo Center for the 10th anniversary show!
