“Most of the state champions over the last few years came almost exclusively from the 5A level schools, and we were included in that group for wrestling,” said Beeville Trojan head coach Terry Foster.
This year, there will be a separate 5A and 4A designation, which will open several slots at the region and state levels to wrestlers unable to reach that lofty level in years past.
The Trojans moved into newly created District 15-4A for wrestling and there are just 16 districts at the 4A level in the state. The Trojans have San Antonio Brooks Academy, San Antonio Highlands, Schertz Clemens, Victoria East and Victoria West joining them in district competition.
“It should work out well for us. We have a few wrestlers that could make it to Region IV competition and possibly to state,” Foster said.
The Trojans say good-bye to 5A Corpus Christi Carroll and King from last year’s district and will not have to meet the bigger 5A schools out of San Antonio, Austin and Houston at the Region IV meet this year. The 4A schools competing in wrestling in Corpus Christi will be in District 16-4A along with a few schools from the Valley.
“It (realignment) really gives the 4A teams a better opportunity to go deeper at region and at state,” Foster said.
The Trojans began their season on Dec. 1 with a tournament in San Antonio, the Charger Classic. It will pit the Trojans against some of the 5A teams and individuals along with several good 4A squads.
The Trojans fared well in 5A wrestling, winning six straight district titles and were always a threat to have a few wrestlers competing at the Region IV meet and even at state over the years.
The Trojans will host three meets this year at Marion B. Horton Gymnasium. On Dec. 18, the Trojans will host a dual meet with the Highlands Owls. On Jan. 15, the Corpus Christi Ray Texans will come to Beeville, and then on Jan. 22, both Victoria East and West will travel here to tangle with the Trojans.
A District 15-4A meet will be held on Feb. 2 at the East Titans’ gymnasium in Victoria. The Region IV meet is set for Feb. 8-9 in San Antonio, and the state 4A meet hopefully will have the Trojans in Austin on Feb. 22-23.
