SAN ANTONIO — On Saturday, the Beeville Trojan wrestling team competed in the Charger Classic Tournament hosted by San Antonio Churchill High School.

The Trojans finished fifth overall with all of the top four teams hailing from 5A districts. Twenty-one teams were at the big opening tournament.

“The kids really showed a lot of excitement wanting to start off the season. We fell short on getting to the finals with a few guys, but we now know where we need to improve and what to work on to get better,” said A.C. Jones High head coach Terry Foster.

The Trojans also had six athletes place in their respective weight classes. Cordell Aguirre placed fourth at 152 pounds. Mario Perez captured third place individually at 126 pounds. Rogelio Salazar also placed third in his 120-pound division. Lady Trojan Danielle Perez placed third at 102 pounds. Joe Montez made it to the finals but finished second at 126 pounds. Brent Puga also captured a second place medal at 220 pounds.

This weekend the wrestlers will return to San Antonio and participate in the LBJ Invitational where the Trojans hit the mat on Friday. The finals are on Saturday. The Lady Trojans will complete their side of the tournament by wrestling only on Saturday.
