In the 165 pound class, Tristan Pelitire had trouble in two of his three lifts but emerged with a three lift total of 1,350 to place second at the region meet.
“I should have been first, but I just got one lift in each of the squat and deadlift,” said Pelitire.
Two of his lifts in each event were ruled out on technicalities, and he had to settle for his initial, lighter lift in both. The winner of the weight class had a total of 1,360, just 10 pounds higher than Pelitire. His usual totals, leading up to the region meet easily exceeded 1,400 pounds. Pelitire helped himself though by bettering the weight class record of 13 years in the bench press. His 360 pound bench press at the region meet is more than double his weight and bettered the 1991 record of 350 pounds.
This will be Pelitire’s first trip to the state meet. He is a junior this year and can possibly look toward a return trip next year.
Jacob Flores placed fourth at the region meet to qualify for the state meet in the 198 pound division. His three-lift total was 1,435 pounds. It will be his first trip, but the senior Trojan will just have this one shot at competing at the state level.
Both are working hard this week to fine tune their techniques and possibly gain a few pounds on their lifts for Abilene.
