Three boys and their fathers participated in a youth hunt the weekend of November 30 - December 2, 2012. Gene Lyssy hosted the hunt for the Texas Youth Hunting Program on his property in Falls City. Texas Youth Hunting Program offers hunting opportunities to youth ages 9-17 who otherwise would not be able to experience the hunting tradition in Texas. The hunts are made possible by landowners like Lyssy who offer their wildlife resources to the youth. The hunts are conducted by certified huntmasters who run the weekend hunt in a safe, structured manner. Landowners are covered by liability insurance provided by TYHP. Youth must complete a hunters education course prior to participating in the program. Successful hunters on Lyssy’s hunt were Kyle Purdes and his father Michael Purdes, who went back to Houston with a big hog. Justin Gonzales harvested a doe with his father Luis Gonzales of San Antonio. Justin Shih of Sugar Land hunted with his father, Amos Shih, and harvested a doe and two hogs. Huntmasters for the hunt were Harry and Shirley Odell of Edna and David Sneed of Victoria. Landowners or youth who are interested in participating in the program may get information at http://www.tyhp.org/.
