Thankfully, the elections are behind us and now it’s only fitting that we pay tribute to the ones who have allowed us the privilege to cast our votes and enjoy our many freedoms.

Yes, Veterans Day will be celebrated across the nation tomorrow at schools, military bases, city halls and county courthouses.

Our most significant local observance will again be held at Veterans Memorial Stadium at A.C. Jones High School, sponsored by the Beeville Garden Club and assisted by the local veterans groups.

However, this year’s event, which begins at 11:15 a.m., will include a special attraction – the unveiling of the eagerly anticipated Bee County Veterans Wall.

We salute the efforts of County Commissioner Eloy Rodriguez, Joe Richard Rodriguez, Armando Musquez, Joe Henry Lopez, Jesse Gonzales and all the Vietnam Veterans Association members and others who have been instrumental in this endeavor to honor this community’s veterans and their families.

Some 600 names have been etched on the wall. “We’re happy people haven’t forgotten their loved ones who served,” Rodriguez said.

We encourage as many local citizens and students as possible to attend Thursday’s Veterans Day Ceremony, and witness the patriotic program, including guest speaker Dr. James Chandler’s recalling his arrival in Vietnam.

Those who do will have a much better appreciation for everything they cherish about living in this incredible land of the free – especially when we still have servicemen and women protecting us overseas from terrorists in faraway places like Afghanistan.
