That win paired the Beeville girls against the state’s eighth-ranked 2A girls team, the Poth Pirettes.
The tall and talented Pirettes struggled against the Beeville man-to-man on Tuesday afternoon. It was a ball game until late in the fourth quarter when the Poth height and toughness took its toll on the Lady Trojans. Poth walked into the gold bracket finals with a 54-43 victory over the Beeville varsity.
“We played a good first half, but had a little drop-off in the third period and you can’t do that against a good team,” said Lady Trojan head coach Greg Gonzales.
“It’s tough to win when you give up 50 plus points. We’ve got to keep our opponents in the 40s to have a chance. We need to put four quarters of good play together.”
The teams battled to an 11-11 tie at the end of one quarter. The Lady Trojans owned an early 10-5 lead but the Pirettes scored six of the last seven points in the quarter to tie things at 11.
The second quarter looked to be going Beeville’s way after 6-2 run to start the third period gave the Lady Trojans a 17-13 advantage. Poth worked back into it with some tough defense and thanks to a couple of Beeville turnovers to tie the game at 17.
Brandy Perez hit a jumper to push the Lady Trojans in front 19-17. The Pirettes countered and again tied the game, but trailed 21-19 with just a few seconds remaining in the half. A Poth three-pointer just before the buzzer put the Pirettes in the lead 22-21 going into halftime.
Poth took advantage of the momentum swing of their three-pointer to make a 7-1 run to start the third period. That put the Lady Trojans in a hole, 29-22, and it was tough to dig out of it. A three-pointer from Cassandra Vela helped as the Lady Trojans pulled to within four at 29-25. The Pirettes hit a basket and it was answered with another Beeville three-pointer, this time from Melanie Chargualaf. That trey got the Lady Trojans back in the tilt at 31-28. A steal by Hillary Hennig on the next Poth possession led to an easy Lady Trojan basket to make it Beeville down by one, 31-30.
The Lady Trojans took the lead, 32-31, on a basket by Brandy Perez, but it did not last long as the Pirettes outscored the Beeville girls 6-2 down the stretch to take a 37-34 lead into the fourth quarter.
The Pirettes changed their defensive strategy a little in the fourth and the confusion led a few bad passes and turnovers for the Lady Trojans. Poth shots that were hitting the rim and bouncing away earlier in the game were now finding nothing but net. The Pirettes captured the final stanza 17-9 over the Lady Trojans to earn a 54-43 and advance into the finals against Rockport-Fulton.
Hennig led the Lady Trojans in scoring with 16 points. Post Erin Tabb finished with 11 markers, nine in the first half but the collapsing Poth defense kept her bottled up over the final two periods. Vela and Chargualaf both made five points. Perez finished with four and Shanise Wilson sank two to complete the JHS scoring.
The Lady Trojans met the Orange Grove Lady Bulldogs in a late game on Tuesday night to decide the tournament’s third place team. The Lady Trojans won the that late night contest by the score of 49-38 over the lady Bulldogs to bring back the third place trophy in the Gold bracket.
The Beeville girls got 19 points from Tabb in the win and another ten points from Hennig. Chargualaf and Vela both recorded eight points in the win. Perez and Wilson both contributed with two tallies to complete the Beeville scoring in the third place tilt.
The Lady Trojans played host to the Alice Coyotes yesterday (Friday) and will get back to their District 30-4A battles on Tuesday when the Miller Lady Bucs visit Beeville.
The freshman ladies will tip things off on Tuesday at 5 p.m. with the JV and varsity games to follow.
